Chemical Oxygen Demand
Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is a vital test for assessing the quality of effluents and waste waters prior to discharge. The COD test predicts the oxygen requirement of the effluent and is used for the monitoring and control of discharges, and for assessing treatment plant performance. The standard test for COD involves digesting the sample with strong sulphuric acid solution in the presence of chromium and silver salts. These potentially hazardous chemicals clearly need to be handled with extreme care. Recent health and safety concerns have made it necessary to find a means of carrying out this vitally important test whilst at the same time minimising the risk to laboratory staff.
The Palintest COD Tubetests System offers a method which is both practical and convenient. The reagents are supplied premixed and predispensed into borosilicate glass test tubes, which reduces contact with potentially hazardous chemicals to a minimum.
Four types are available, allowing the user to choose the most environmentally-friendly product for their application:
- The mercury-free formulation is recommended for general use
- The formulation with mercuric sulphate (M) is provided for use in standard procedures which require the suppression of interference due to moderate levels of Chloride
- The high Chloride formulation (2M) provides much higher levels of chloride suppression and is suitable for working with samples with very high Chloride levels
- The new M/C formulations with mercuric sulphate are specifically for use in non-Palintest instruments, and allow users of compatible instruments to take advantage of the price, quality, and service we offer, whilst using their existing instrumentation. The new product comes in 3 ranges: up to 150mg/l, up to 1500mg/l and up to 15,000 mg/l.
Reliability
The reagent formulations are based on those specified in recognised international standard methods and meet the requirements of conformity testing against national and international standards.
COD Laboratory Set
The COD Laboratory Set contains all of the hardware required to carry out COD tests quickly and efficiently - COD Tubetests Heater with built-in safety system, test tube rack and micropipettor.
The Palintest COD Tubetests heater is a dedicated dry-block heater which allows up to 12 tubes to be digested at the same time. Temperature fluctuation is controlled by the use of a platinum sensor controller providing uniform and controlled heating to the correct temperature for all the tubes placed in the block. The heater has a metal case construction and is fitted with an illuminated ON/OFF switch and heater indicator lamp. Available in 220/240v 50 Hz and 110/220v 60 Hz versions. A 24-tube block is also available to special order.
The Palintest Tubetests Heater (PT 589), Thermometer (PT 689), Test Tube Rack (PT 588), Photometer Adapter (PT 586) and Micropipettor (PT 572) are all available separately for use with existing equipment.
The multi-tube block heater offers significant advantages in space saving and power consumption compared with the traditional method. The Palintest Tubetests range, of which the COD tubes are one product line, covers all the main parameters needed for water and effluent monitoring, including Ammonia, Nitrate, Total Nitrogen, Phosphate, Total Phosphorous, Nickel, Chromium, Iron, Zinc and Copper.
The Lab Set is intended for use with any of Palintest's multi-parameter photometers.
Photometer Systems
The Palintest COD laboratory set is intended for use in conjunction with one of Palintest’s multi-parameter photometers. The Photometer systems which can be provided as an integral part of the COD determination are purpose designed to provide a high quality analysis with complete data capture capability.
