Palintest Chlorometer Used to Keep Seal Sanctuary Safe

September 2005
Palintest's hand-held Micro 1000 Chlorometer is helping to ensure that seals at the National Seal Sanctuary in Cornwall have a safe environment to swim in. The meter is used to monitor the levels of chlorine in the South American Sea Lion Pool. It keeps the residents Carus and Dipity safe, and is so simple to use that any member of the team can use it.
The pool was developed in 2001 and features a chlorine drip system to combat bacteria and algae. The chlorine levels vary with factors such as the amount of organic material in the water and the amount of sunlight. Regular monitoring of chlorine is important to ensure it is maintained at the correct levels. A visual colorimetric system was used initially, but the Chlorometer was introduced due to its increased accuracy.
The Micro 1000 Chlorometer accurately measures the level of residual chlorine disinfectant in water almost instantaneously. The Chlorometer is used with the universal DPD colorimetric test reagent system supplied as foil-encapsulated tablets. Once a tablet has been dissolved in a water sample tube, it takes just a few seconds to insert the tube in the meter, press the membrane keypad and observe the reading displayed in mg/litre on a 10mm LCD.
Chlorine is measured in the 0-5.00 mg/litre range with a resolution of 0.01 mg/litre. In addition to measurement of ‘free’ chlorine, other DPD reagent tablets will reveal the total and combined chlorine concentration. Zeroing is automatic and the zero setting is held in memory. Each Chlorometer is certified to conform to calibration standards.
